Team USA head coach Kara Lawson is facing intense criticism from basketball fans after Caitlin Clark continued her tournament in a reserve role, igniting one of the biggest talking points of the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup.
Despite being one of the sport’s brightest stars, Clark has frequently entered games from the bench, prompting passionate reactions across social media. Many supporters argue that her elite passing, long-range shooting, and playmaking deserve a place in the starting lineup, while others believe Lawson is prioritizing experience and team chemistry over individual popularity.
The debate intensified after another impressive performance from Clark, who energized the American offense with her scoring and assists shortly after checking into the game. Fans flooded social media with calls for Lawson to rethink her rotation, with many questioning why one of Team USA’s most dynamic guards is not opening games on the floor.
Lawson, however, has remained composed amid the criticism. The veteran coach has consistently emphasized that the United States is focused on winning a fifth consecutive World Cup title rather than rewarding individual status. She has also pointed to the depth of the roster, featuring stars such as Breanna Stewart, Chelsea Gray, Paige Bueckers, and Kahleah Copper, as proof that every player has a valuable role.
For Clark, the attention has done little to distract her. The Indiana Fever guard has embraced her opportunity to represent Team USA and has repeatedly stressed that contributing to victories matters more than whether she starts or comes off the bench.
As Team USA advances deeper into the tournament, the spotlight will remain firmly on Lawson’s coaching decisions. Whether Clark eventually earns a starting role or continues thriving as a sixth woman, one thing is certain—the conversation surrounding her impact is far from over, and every lineup decision will continue to generate enormous attention from fans around the world
