In a heartbreaking announcement that has sent shockwaves through the WNBA, New York Liberty forward Satou Sabally revealed Thursday that she is retiring from professional basketball, effective immediately, following a devastating head injury sustained on June 23.
The 27-year-old German international, one of the league’s most dynamic two-way players, suffered the injury during a hard collision in a game against the Connecticut Sun. Sabally was knocked to the floor after absorbing an inadvertent elbow while driving to the basket. She remained motionless for several minutes before being stretchered off the court and taken to a hospital for evaluation.
Initial reports indicated a concussion. Subsequent medical assessments, however, revealed more serious complications, including lingering neurological symptoms that have not fully resolved despite months of specialized treatment and rest. After consulting with multiple neurologists and team physicians, Sabally and her medical team concluded that continuing to play posed unacceptable long-term risks.
“This is the hardest decision of my life,” Sabally said in a statement released through the Liberty. “Basketball has been my passion, my identity, and my dream since I was a little girl in Germany. But my health and my future have to come first. The doctors made it clear that another impact could have permanent consequences. I am grateful for every moment I got to wear this uniform and compete at the highest level.”
Sabally joined the Liberty ahead of the 2025 season after several productive years with the Dallas Wings, where she established herself as a versatile scorer, rebounder, and defender. In New York she quickly became a fan favorite, averaging strong numbers and helping the team remain competitive in the Eastern Conference before the injury sidelined her.
Liberty head coach Sandy Brondello praised Sabally’s professionalism and impact. “Satou brought energy, skill, and heart every single day. We are devastated for her but fully support her decision. Her courage in putting her health first is an example to everyone.”
The WNBA Players Association and league officials issued statements of support, emphasizing player safety. Fans flooded social media with messages of encouragement and sadness over the abrupt end to a promising career.
Sabally has not detailed her post-playing plans but expressed hope of remaining involved in the game in some capacity, whether through coaching, mentoring, or advocacy for concussion awareness. For now, the focus remains on her recovery.
The Liberty will honor Sabally with a special ceremony later this season. Her sudden retirement marks a painful chapter for the franchise and a stark reminder of the physical toll the sport can exact.
