Indiana Fever guard Kelsey Mitchell is set to be fined $15000 by the WNBA following a brief but intense confrontation with Toronto Tempo’s Marina Mabrey during Indiana’s 101-95 victory on Tuesday night in Toronto.
The incident occurred early in the third quarter at Scotiabank Arena. Mabrey had been applying physical defense on Mitchell, who appeared frustrated by the contact and holding. Mitchell responded by shoving Mabrey, getting in her face, pointing, and delivering strong words—reportedly along the lines of “don’t [expletive] do that again.” Officials quickly assessed double technical fouls to both players and separated them before the situation escalated further.
Under WNBA rules, a player’s first three technical fouls of the season each carry a $15000 fine. This was Mitchell’s second technical of the year, so she is in line for the standard $500 penalty. Mabrey, meanwhile, received her fifth technical and faces a $10000 fine plus an expected warning letter as she approaches the threshold for additional discipline (eight technicals trigger a $15000 fine and one-game suspension).
Mitchell, known for her typically calm demeanor, delivered a standout performance otherwise. She scored a game-high 29 points on 11-of-16 shooting (including 4-of-6 from three) before leaving the game late in the third quarter after becoming overheated in the steamy arena conditions. Caitlin Clark added 24 points and seven assists as the Fever improved to a strong stretch with their fifth consecutive win. Mabrey led Toronto with 22 points in the loss, the Tempo’s 11th straight defeat.
Video of the exchange quickly circulated, highlighting how rare it is for Mitchell to engage this way. Commentators noted she usually lets her play do the talking. The moment stayed verbal and physical only to the point of the shove and jawing—no punches were thrown, and neither player was ejected.
The league’s technical-foul fine structure is designed to discourage unsportsmanlike conduct without overly punishing competitive fire. At $15000, Mitchell’s penalty is relatively minor for a star averaging over 24 points per game. The Fever continue their strong season while both players move forward from the brief flare-up.
