The Dallas Wings have been officially disqualified from the 2026 WNBA playoffs following a sweeping investigation that uncovered a match-fixing and illegal betting scheme involving multiple players and team personnel. The league announced the decision late Thursday, citing “irrefutable evidence of coordinated efforts to manipulate game outcomes for financial gain.”
According to a detailed report released by the WNBA Integrity Unit, the scandal centered on several regular-season contests during the 2025 campaign. Investigators found that at least four Wings players and two members of the coaching staff participated in a betting ring that placed large wagers through offshore accounts and third-party intermediaries. The scheme allegedly involved intentionally underperforming in key moments—missed free throws, delayed defensive rotations, and strategic fouls—to influence the final scores of tightly contested games.
League sources say the investigation began after unusual betting patterns were flagged by monitoring firms working with the WNBA and its partners. Subsequent interviews, financial records, and digital communications allegedly linked the players to a network of bettors based in multiple countries. One player is said to have received tens of thousands of dollars in unreported payments, while others were promised future compensation tied to specific game results.
In a statement, WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert called the findings “a profound betrayal of the integrity that defines our league.” She added that the league would not tolerate any actions that undermine fair competition. The Wings organization released a brief response expressing “shock and disappointment,” noting that it would fully cooperate with any further inquiries and had already placed the implicated individuals on indefinite leave.
The disqualification means Dallas, which finished the 2025 season with a strong playoff seed, will be barred from postseason play next year. The vacant playoff berth will be filled by the next-highest eligible team according to league standings. Additional penalties, including potential lifetime bans, fines, and criminal referrals, remain under review.
Players across the league expressed dismay. Several veterans called the scandal “devastating” for a league that has worked hard to build trust with fans and sponsors. The WNBA has pledged enhanced monitoring of betting activity and expanded education programs for athletes beginning immediately.
The full investigative report is expected to be made public in the coming weeks, though certain details remain sealed pending possible legal proceedings.
