Sophie Cunningham, 30 was arrested early Monday morning following a chaotic fight that broke out during her own birthday celebration at a popular Midtown nightclub.
According to Atlanta Police Department reports, officers responded to Club Verve on Peachtree Street just after 1:30 a.m. after multiple 911 calls reported a large disturbance inside the venue. Witnesses said the altercation began near the VIP section where Cunningham was celebrating her birthday with roughly two dozen friends.
What started as a verbal dispute over spilled drinks and alleged disrespect quickly escalated. Several people began pushing and throwing punches. Cunningham was seen by multiple patrons attempting to intervene before becoming physically involved herself. One witness told police that Cunningham “came flying across the table” after another woman allegedly grabbed her friend’s hair.
Club security moved in to separate the group, but the situation spilled onto the dance floor. By the time officers arrived, tables had been overturned, glassware was shattered, and at least four people were bleeding from minor cuts. No life-threatening injuries were reported.
Cunningham was taken into custody without further incident. She was charged with disorderly conduct, simple battery, and public intoxication. Three other individuals were also arrested in connection with the brawl. Bond was set at $2,500 for Cunningham, and she was released later Sunday afternoon.
In a brief statement through her attorney, Cunningham expressed regret. “This was supposed to be a fun night with friends,” the attorney said. “Things got out of hand very quickly. Sophie is cooperating fully and takes responsibility for her part in the situation.”
Club Verve management declined to comment beyond confirming that the private party had been cut short and that the venue cooperated with investigators. A club employee who asked not to be named said the birthday group had been “loud but fine” until the confrontation erupted.
Social media filled quickly with cellphone videos of the scuffle. In one widely shared clip, Cunningham can be heard yelling before security pulls her away. Another video shows chairs being knocked over as patrons scramble for the exits.
Friends of Cunningham described the evening as “completely unexpected.” One longtime friend said the group had been celebrating for hours without incident before a disagreement with another party nearby turned physical.
Police are reviewing surveillance footage and additional witness statements. No further charges have been announced at this time. Cunningham is scheduled to appear in Fulton County court next month.
The incident marks a turbulent start to what was meant to be a milestone birthday celebration in Atlanta’s nightlife scene.
