Silver Hands Fever-Aces Game 2 to Elite NBA Officials

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver has assigned a crew of veteran NBA referees to Tuesday night’s Indiana Fever–Las Vegas Aces first-round playoff game, a rare crossover move meant to tighten control of a series already marked by physical play and officiating complaints.

Game 2 tips at 6:30 p.m. ET at Gainbridge Fieldhouse with the Aces leading 1-0 after a 102-85 win in Las Vegas. A’ja Wilson posted 38 points, 16 rebounds and four blocks. Caitlin Clark and Aliyah Boston are listed as probable for Indiana.

Silver’s office did not release a full public statement, but league sources said the assignment reflects concern over consistency after a regular season and playoff opener filled with debates over contact on stars, flagrant reviews and free-throw disparities. Both coaches have voiced frustration at different points this year. Silver has previously said Caitlin Clark should not become a “political football” and that WNBA officiating needs improvement.

The move puts NBA-caliber officials on a high-visibility WNBA playoff floor. The two leagues already share replay infrastructure and some developmental pipelines; sending a top NBA crew for a must-win home game for the Fever is still unusual. Fans and media have spent months arguing whether the women’s game is officiated the same way as the men’s, especially around Clark.

Indiana needs a win to force a Game 3 in Las Vegas on Thursday. The Fever led the league in scoring during the regular season and play well at home. Las Vegas, the three-time champion and No. 3 seed, looks like the more complete team after Wilson’s Game 1 masterclass.

A cleaner, more consistent whistle would let the talent decide it: Wilson’s interior dominance against Boston, Clark’s playmaking against Las Vegas’ length, and whether Indiana can match the Aces’ physicality without living at the free-throw line.

Tuesday’s game will test whether Silver’s intervention changes the tone or simply raises the stakes. Either way, the officials will be under a brighter spotlight than usual.
