In a dramatic late-night development, the WNBA has reversed the suspension-triggering technical foul handed to Atlanta Dream star Angel Reese following the team’s heavy defeat to the Portland Fire. The decision means Reese will avoid the automatic one-game suspension that initially appeared inevitable.
The controversy began during Atlanta’s 101–83 loss to Portland on Friday night. Reese was assessed what would have been her eighth technical foul of the regular season after becoming tangled with Portland guard Carla Leite during a fourth-quarter sequence. Under WNBA rules, an eighth technical normally brings an automatic one-game suspension.
The incident occurred as Atlanta guard Rhyne Howard was making a three-pointer. Leite was attempting to box Reese out, with both players involved in physical contact before Reese pushed herself free. Reese immediately protested the call, appearing to believe the punishment was excessive.
For the Dream, the timing of the decision was particularly important. Atlanta had already suffered a significant setback against Portland, and losing Reese for the next game would have created another major problem for a team fighting for a strong playoff position.
The Dream quickly appealed the technical foul, and the league moved unusually fast. Reports indicate that the WNBA reviewed the incident and rescinded the technical within a few hours of the game ending. As a result, Reese remains at seven technical fouls for the season rather than eight.
That ruling makes Reese eligible to play in Atlanta’s upcoming matchup against the Minnesota Lynx on Sunday. The availability of the star forward could be crucial, particularly given her enormous impact on the boards and her growing importance to Atlanta’s playoff ambitions.
Despite the disappointing loss, Reese still produced an impressive individual performance against Portland, finishing with 16 points, 16 rebounds and six assists. However, Atlanta could not overcome Portland’s offensive attack, with the Fire securing a convincing 101–83 victory.
The decision also comes after a similar situation involving Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark earlier this month. Clark also had an eighth technical foul rescinded by the league, allowing her to avoid an automatic suspension. The two cases have therefore generated additional discussion about the league’s review process for technical fouls.
For Reese, the reversal is another major development in an already remarkable season. Just days earlier, she made WNBA history by recording a league-record 26 rebounds against the Los Angeles Sparks while also breaking the league’s single-season rebounding record.
Her recent form has made her one of the most important players on Atlanta’s roster. Reese’s rebounding, physical presence and ability to create second-chance opportunities have become central to the Dream’s style, making her absence potentially costly during the final stretch of the regular season.
Now, instead of sitting out, Reese will have the opportunity to respond on the court. The matchup with Minnesota gives the Dream a chance to put the Portland loss behind them, while Reese will enter the game knowing that the league has officially cleared the technical foul from her record.
The WNBA’s decision is therefore being viewed as a significant reprieve for both Reese and Atlanta. What initially looked like a one-game suspension has instead become a major talking point surrounding officiating, technical fouls and the league’s review process.
For Angel Reese, however, the message is simple: the suspension is off, the technical has been rescinded, and she is free to return to action. All eyes will now be on the Dream star to see whether she can turn the controversy into motivation and help Atlanta bounce back from its d ifficult loss to Portland.
