Max Verstappen Confirms GT Racing Return as His F1 Sc…… read more 👇 full details in the comments section
Max Verstappen is preparing for another busy period in his racing career after confirming that he will return to GT racing later this month. The four-time Formula 1 world champion is set to compete in Portugal, adding another major racing commitment to an already demanding schedule.
Verstappen will take part in the final round of the GT World Challenge Europe at the Portimao circuit on Saturday, October 17. His return to a GT car has been anticipated for some time, and the Dutch driver has now confirmed that he will be back behind the wheel.
The appearance will mark Verstappen’s return to GT competition since his participation in the Nürburgring 24 Hours earlier this year. During that event in May, Verstappen and his teammates were involved in the fight for a strong result and appeared capable of challenging for victory before a technical problem affected their chances.
Despite the disappointment, Verstappen’s interest in GT racing has remained strong. His latest appearance will give him another opportunity to compete in a different type of racing machinery while also gaining valuable experience that could potentially benefit his Formula 1 activities.
The timing of the Portimao event is particularly interesting because the Portuguese Grand Prix is returning to the Formula 1 calendar. Portimao has not hosted an F1 race since 2021, but the circuit is scheduled to make its comeback. Verstappen’s experience at the venue in a GT car could therefore provide useful familiarity with the track ahead of the Formula 1 weekend.
However, the biggest challenge for Verstappen may not be the race itself but the demanding schedule surrounding it. The Red Bull driver admitted during Thursday’s FIA press conference in Malaysia that the next several weeks will be extremely busy.
“It’s going to be a busy seven weeks,” Verstappen explained, highlighting just how packed his calendar has become.
Interestingly, Verstappen was not originally expected to compete in the Portuguese GT event. The circumstances changed after two of his regular teammates, Jules Gounon and Dani Juncadella, became unavailable because of their commitments to the World Endurance Championship event in Barcelona.
With the team’s usual drivers unable to participate, Verstappen agreed to step in and fill one of the available seats. The situation means he will have to balance his Formula 1 responsibilities with his GT racing commitments.
Verstappen acknowledged that he would have preferred his regular teammates to be available but said he was still excited about the opportunity.
According to Verstappen, the reshuffled schedule meant that new drivers had to become involved, creating an unexpected opportunity for him to compete. Rather than seeing the additional commitment as a problem, he appears ready to embrace the challenge and make the most of the weekend.
The timing will make the situation even more demanding because Formula 1 itself is entering an intense part of the season. The championship is currently moving through a triple-header involving Azerbaijan, Malaysia and Singapore.
After those races, Verstappen will have only a single weekend without an F1 event before another triple-header arrives. During that break, instead of simply resting and preparing for the next Formula 1 race, the Dutchman will travel to Portugal to compete in the GT World Challenge Europe finale.
That means Verstappen will have very little time away from competitive racing. Between Formula 1 duties, travel, preparation and his GT commitments, the coming weeks are likely to require careful management of his time and energy.
Nevertheless, Verstappen’s decision to participate demonstrates his continued enthusiasm for different forms of motorsport. While Formula 1 remains his primary focus, he has repeatedly shown an interest in endurance and GT racing.
His participation at Portimao could also make the event particularly interesting for fans who want to see one of F1’s leading drivers compete outside the championship. Verstappen will have to adapt to the characteristics of a GT car and work with his teammates while facing drivers who regularly compete in this category.
For now, Verstappen is focused on getting through an extremely demanding stretch of the season. His Formula 1 campaign remains the priority, but the opportunity to return to GT racing has added another exciting chapter to his already packed calendar.
With the Portimao race approaching on October 17, fans will be watching closely to see how Verstappen performs when he steps away from his Red Bull Formula 1 car and climbs back into a GT machine.
One thing is certain: the next several weeks will be anything but quiet for Max Verstappen. 🏎️🔥
