Indiana Fever head coach Stephanie White has made a decisive lineup change, removing Lexie Hull from the starting five amid concerns over the veteran wing’s recent form.
Hull, a defensive specialist and Stanford product who has started the majority of games this season alongside Caitlin Clark, Kelsey Mitchell, Aliyah Boston and others, will now come off the bench. White cited inconsistent production and a dip in overall impact as the primary reasons for the move, which comes as the Fever (22-12) push for positioning in a competitive Eastern Conference.
“We’ve seen stretches where Lexie hasn’t been as effective as we need her to be on both ends,” White said in a brief statement. “She’s a tough, high-character player who does a lot of the dirty work, but right now the group needs a different look to generate better results. This isn’t permanent, but we have to respond to what’s happening on the floor.”
Hull has averaged modest scoring numbers in limited usage while remaining a key piece of Indiana’s defensive identity. Her hustle and ability to guard multiple positions have long been praised by White, who previously elevated her into the starting group earlier in the year after an injury-related slow start. Yet recent outings have featured quieter statistical lines and moments where the Fever’s overall flow appeared disrupted when she was on the floor.
The decision reflects White’s willingness to make tough calls even with established contributors. Hull has started frequently this season, including in recent wins, but the coach is prioritizing immediate results as the schedule intensifies. Sophie Cunningham or another rotation player is expected to step into the opening five, giving the second unit added scoring punch while Hull works to regain her rhythm.
For Hull, the demotion is a familiar challenge. She has bounced between starting and reserve roles throughout her career and has previously responded with improved energy and production. Teammates and coaches have consistently described her as a professional who accepts whatever role is asked of her without complaint.
Fever fans will watch closely to see how Hull reacts. A strong response off the bench could force White’s hand again quickly, especially with the team still battling for a high playoff seed. For now, the message from the head coach is clear: performance, not past contributions, will dictate minutes and roles as Indiana aims higher in 2026.
The change underscores the competitive standard White has set for a roster featuring Clark and other high-level talent. Whether Hull reclaims her starting spot will depend on her ability to elevate her game in the coming contests.
