The Indiana Fever have suspended veteran guard Sophie Cunningham for Sunday’s game against the Washington Mystics after she violated team rules by attending a late-night party in Washington, D.C., and subsequently missing the team’s mandatory morning shootaround, the franchise announced Saturday.
According to sources close to the team, Cunningham was seen out into the early hours of Saturday morning at a popular D.C. nightspot, hours before the Fever were scheduled to hold their pregame walkthrough and film session. When the team gathered the next morning, Cunningham’s seat was noticeably empty. Coaches attempted to reach her by phone before she eventually arrived, well after the session had concluded.
The Fever front office moved swiftly, handing down a one-game suspension for conduct detrimental to the team. Head coach Christie Sides addressed the matter briefly with reporters, calling it an “internal matter” while emphasizing that accountability remains non-negotiable.
“We hold everyone in this locker room to the same standard,” Sides said. “Sophie knows that. She’s disappointed in herself, and we’ll handle it as a family. Right now, our focus is on Sunday’s game.”
Cunningham, known for her fiery competitiveness and three-point shooting off the bench, issued a short statement through the team, apologizing to her teammates, coaches, and Fever fans.
“I let my team down, plain and simple,” Cunningham said. “That’s on me, and I accept the consequences.”
Her absence thins an already guard-heavy rotation as Indiana continues its push toward the postseason. The Fever enter Sunday’s matchup needing every available body against a Mystics squad hungry for a statement win at home.
Teammates publicly backed Cunningham, with one veteran noting that “one mistake doesn’t define a player,” but the suspension sends a clear message: in Indiana, talent earns minutes — discipline earns trust. Cunningham will be eligible to return for the Fever’s next game.
