Thick black smoke poured into the Indianapolis skyline Saturday afternoon as a major fire erupted at Gainbridge Fieldhouse, the iconic downtown arena that serves as home to the Indiana Fever of the WNBA and the Indiana Pacers of the NBA.
Witnesses first noticed smoke rising from the upper levels of the building shortly after midday. Within minutes, flames became visible through sections of the structure, sending dense plumes skyward that could be seen from miles away. Emergency vehicles flooded the area as the Indianapolis Fire Department dispatched multiple units to the scene.
Police quickly established a wide perimeter around the arena at 125 S. Pennsylvania Street. Nearby streets were closed, pedestrians were directed away from the area, and vehicles were diverted. Authorities urged the public to avoid downtown Indianapolis entirely due to heavy smoke and ongoing emergency operations.
“It happened so fast,” one nearby resident said. “One minute everything looked normal, and the next the sky was filled with black smoke.”
Firefighters arrived rapidly and began attacking the blaze from multiple angles, deploying high-pressure hoses and aerial ladders. Officials described the fire as a rapidly escalating structural incident. As of the latest reports, no injuries or fatalities had been confirmed, though the full extent of the damage remained unclear while crews focused on containment.
The Indiana Fever organization issued a brief statement asking fans and the public to stay clear of the area and to monitor official updates from emergency services. All events at the Fieldhouse have been postponed indefinitely. The WNBA was monitoring the situation closely.
Social media filled with dramatic photos and videos showing smoke billowing from the arena and firefighters working amid the haze. Fans expressed shock and concern for a building that has become central to Indianapolis basketball culture, particularly during the Fever’s recent surge in popularity.
City officials warned residents in surrounding areas to stay indoors, keep windows closed, and avoid outdoor activity while smoke lingered. Additional emergency personnel were called in to manage traffic and support evacuation efforts.
As firefighters continued their work into the afternoon, the situation remained fluid. Gainbridge Fieldhouse, a landmark of Indiana sports since opening in 1999, faced one of the most serious emergencies in its history. Officials said containment efforts were ongoing, with further updates expected as crews assess the structure and bring the fire under control.
