Tempers flared and the whistle blew late in a physical WNBA matchup Tuesday night as Dijonai Carrington was ejected following a heated confrontation with Brittney Griner during the Chicago Sky’s contest against the Phoenix Suns.
The incident unfolded with just under four minutes remaining in the third quarter. With the Sky leading by single digits, Griner posted up on the block and absorbed contact while rising for a short jumper. Carrington, defending aggressively, appeared to shove Griner after the shot. The two players exchanged words, stepped toward each other, and the officials quickly intervened. After a lengthy review and discussion among the crew, Carrington was hit with a flagrant foul and ejected from the game.
Sky head coach Teresa Weatherspoon expressed disappointment afterward but stopped short of criticizing the officials. “Emotions run high in these rivalry-type games. Dijonai competes hard every night. We’ll review the film and move forward,” she said. Carrington herself left the arena without speaking to reporters.
Griner, who finished with 18 points and nine rebounds, downplayed the exchange. “It’s a physical league. Things happen. We both wanted the ball and the win. Nothing more to it,” the veteran center said. Suns coach Nate Tibbetts praised his team’s composure, noting they used the technical free throws and ensuing momentum to close the gap before Chicago ultimately held on for a narrow victory.
The ejection marked Carrington’s first of the season. The versatile guard/forward has built a reputation for tenacious defense and fearless play since joining the Sky. Fans on social media quickly split between those who felt the officials overreacted and those who argued the physicality crossed a line.
The Sky improved to improve their standing in a tight conference race, while the Suns continue to battle inconsistency on the road. Both teams return to action later this week, with league officials expected to review the sequence for any potential additional discipline.
In a league known for its intensity and star power, nights like this serve as reminders that competitive fire can sometimes boil over. For Carrington, the focus now shifts to bouncing back in the next matchup. For Griner and the Suns, the loss stings, but the veteran presence remains steady.
