DEAL REJECTED: Newcastle United Goalkeeper Nick Pope Deal Has Just Been Cancelled Due To

Newcastle United goalkeeper Nick Pope has seen a potential move away from St James’ Park fall through, with the transfer situation remaining unresolved after the English transfer window closed on September 1, 2026. Reports indicate that Pope was expected to leave the club this summer, but no completed transfer materialised.

The 34-year-old goalkeeper has found himself facing increased competition at Newcastle following the arrival of new goalkeepers Lukas Horníček and Ewen Jaouen. Their arrivals changed the goalkeeping hierarchy and left Pope’s position at the club uncertain during the summer window.

Pope had been linked with several possible destinations during the transfer period. Celtic were among the clubs mentioned in reports, although later information indicated that Celtic had not actually made contact with Newcastle or Pope regarding a transfer.

Interest from other clubs also failed to develop into a completed deal. Reports mentioned tentative interest from Hull City, Ipswich Town and Leeds United, but none of those possibilities resulted in a concrete transfer before the deadline.

The biggest problem eventually became timing. The Premier League transfer window closed at 11pm on September 1, meaning English clubs could no longer complete ordinary incoming or outgoing domestic transfers. Pope therefore remained a Newcastle player despite the uncertainty surrounding his future.

The situation has also affected Pope’s place in the squad. Newcastle’s official team information recently listed Lukas Horníček as the starting goalkeeper and Pope as the backup in one matchday squad, showing that Pope remained registered with the club after the transfer window closed.

Newcastle’s current goalkeeping situation means Pope may have to wait for another opportunity to secure regular football. Reports have suggested that his remaining options are now limited because most major European transfer windows have already closed.

However, the story may not be completely finished. Saudi Arabia’s transfer window is scheduled to remain open until October 12, 2026, meaning a move could theoretically still become possible if a suitable opportunity develops there.

For now, though, there is no confirmed transfer taking Pope away from Newcastle. The goalkeeper remains contracted to the Magpies, and the immediate consequence of the failed summer move is that he stays at St James’ Park while his next career move remains uncertain.

Pope originally joined Newcastle from Burnley in June 2022 and has made more than 100 Premier League appearances for the club. Newcastle’s official profile continues to list him as part of the men’s first-team squad.

The latest development therefore represents more of a failed or uncompleted exit than a confirmed cancellation of an already-completed transfer. Newcastle supporters will now wait to see whether Pope remains at the club for the season or finds an opportunity in one of the remaining  open transfer markets.
