Phoenix Mercury forward Alyssa Thomas was ejected in the final minutes of Saturday’s matchup against the Dallas Wings after a violent head-to-head collision with star guard Paige Bueckers left both players crumpled on the floor and the College Park Center crowd in stunned silence.
With 3:42 remaining in the fourth quarter and the Wings leading by eight, Bueckers drove hard into the lane. Thomas stepped up to contest. The two met with full force, their heads slamming together in a sickening crack that could be heard throughout the arena. Both players immediately dropped. Bueckers clutched the side of her head, while Thomas remained motionless for several seconds before trainers rushed the floor.
Officials reviewed the play and ruled Thomas had initiated illegal contact with excessive force. She was assessed a Flagrant Foul 2 and ejected. The Mercury star walked off the court without argument, still holding a towel to her forehead as the Dallas crowd mixed boos with concerned murmurs.
Bueckers was helped to the locker room and did not return. Preliminary reports indicated she was evaluated for a possible concussion. Thomas was also checked by team medical staff after the ejection.
The collision shifted the momentum. Dallas pulled away in the closing minutes behind Arike Ogunbowale’s late scoring burst, securing a 92-81 victory that extended their winning streak.
Mercury coach Nate Tibbetts called the play “unfortunate and physical,” while Wings coach Jose Fernandez praised Bueckers’ toughness but expressed concern for her health. “You never want to see two competitors go down like that,” Fernandez said.
The incident adds another chapter to Thomas’s reputation for physical play and leaves both teams monitoring their star players ahead of the remainder of the season.
