Dijonai Carrington Was  Ejected After Spitting on Sabrina Ionescu in during a Heated Encounter in the 3rd Quarter…

In what should have been a showcase of elite women’s basketball, the WNBA was instead rocked by a moment of sheer ugliness on Tuesday night when Connecticut Sun guard Dijonai Carrington was ejected after blatantly spitting on Liberty superstar Sabrina Ionescu during a heated fourth-quarter confrontation.

The incident unfolded with 4:12 remaining in a fiercely contested game. Ionescu, driving hard to the basket, collided with Carrington on a screen. Both players tumbled to the floor, and what began as a routine hard foul instantly escalated into a screaming match. Expletives flew, teammates scrambled to separate the pair, and referees rushed in to restore order.

But the situation turned disgusting when Carrington, still fuming and jawing at Ionescu, leaned forward and spat directly into the face of the two-time All-Star. The arena gasped. Ionescu recoiled, wiping her face in disbelief, while Liberty players surrounded her in protective fury.

The officials immediately huddled at the monitor. After a tense review, Carrington was assessed a flagrant 2 foul and given a hard ejection, her night over after just 19 minutes of play. She finished with 8 points, but her stat line was irrelevant—the act overshadowed everything.

“That’s not basketball. That’s just disrespect,” Ionescu said postgame, visibly shaken. “There’s competition, and then there’s crossing every line. You don’t spit on people. That’s sickening.”

Liberty coach Sandy Brondello called the act “unacceptable in any sport, at any level,” and demanded the league levy serious punishment. The WNBA is expected to review the incident; a multi-game suspension and heavy fine are almost certain.

For Carrington, the fallout will be swift and severe—not just from the league, but from a fanbase and locker room that will rightfully question her professionalism. In a split second of rage, she turned a marquee matchup into a national embarrassment. The league’s integrity has been stained, and the only question that remains is how harshly she will pay for her unforgivable lapse in judgment.
