In a stunning late roster move, Indiana Fever guard Kelsey Mitchell has been selected to replace injured Phoenix Mercury star Kelsey Plum on the USA Women’s Basketball team for the 2026 FIBA World Cup in Berlin.
USA Basketball confirmed the change Saturday evening, citing Plum’s ongoing lower-leg and calf issues that have limited her availability since midseason. Officials determined the veteran guard would not be fully ready for the tournament that begins September 4.
Mitchell, who has averaged a career-best 24 points per game this season while shooting over 50 percent from the field and nearly 44 percent from three, becomes the newest member of a star-studded American squad already featuring teammates Caitlin Clark and Aliyah Boston. The addition gives the defending champions another elite scoring threat off the perimeter and adds proven chemistry among the three Fever players.
“Kelsey’s production and professionalism made this an easy decision,” said a USA Basketball spokesperson. “She has earned this opportunity through her play, and we’re confident she will contribute immediately.”
Fever fans erupted with celebration online, many calling the move long overdue after Mitchell’s earlier omission from the original 12-player roster. The 30-year-old Ohio State product has long been one of the WNBA’s most consistent scorers, yet had never appeared in a major senior 5×5 international tournament.
Mitchell is expected to join the team for final preparations in the coming days. With her arrival, Team USA strengthens its backcourt depth as it pursues a fifth consecutive World Cup gold medal.
The move marks a major personal milestone for Mitchell and delivers a boost of national pride for the Indiana Fever organization.
