WNBA guard Dijonai Carrington was briefly detained at Los Angeles International Airport on Thursday morning following a heated verbal altercation with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials, according to airport sources and eyewitness accounts.
The incident occurred at approximately 8:15 AM in Terminal 4, where Carrington was arriving from a preseason promotional tour in Mexico. Witnesses report that tensions escalated when ICE agents approached a group of passengers for document verification, a routine operation that quickly drew Carrington’s attention.
According to a passenger who asked to remain anonymous, Carrington intervened after observing an agent speaking aggressively to a young Latina woman who appeared distressed. “Dijonai stepped in and asked the agent to show more professionalism,” the witness said. “It escalated fast. She wasn’t physically aggressive, but she was very vocal, telling them their tactics were intimidation, not law enforcement.”
The confrontation drew a small crowd, prompting airport security to separate Carrington from the ICE team. She was then handcuffed and taken to a secondary holding area for questioning. Law enforcement officials stated she was detained for “obstructing a federal operation,” but no formal charges were filed.
Carrington was released after roughly 90 minutes, with ICE spokesperson Marcus Hale confirming that “the situation was resolved without incident and no arrest was made.” Hale added that the agency respects the rights of individuals to express their opinions, though he emphasized the importance of allowing federal agents to perform their duties without interruption.
Carrington, known for her activism as much as her on-court tenacity, posted a brief statement on social media following her release: *”I will never stand by while my community is targeted. If that means I miss a flight, so be it. We have to protect each other.”*
Her WNBA team, the Connecticut Sun, released a statement expressing full support for Carrington, calling her “a leader on and off the court whose commitment to justice is unwavering.” The team added that they are working with her legal team to review the events of the morning.
The incident has quickly reignited debates about ICE presence in public spaces, with civil rights groups calling for a full review of airport enforcement protocols. Carrington is expected to return to Connecticut later today.
