Las Vegas Aces star A’ja Wilson has been suspended one game by the WNBA for inappropriate misconduct stemming from a tense exchange with a courtside fan during Tuesday night’s playoff contest, league sources confirmed Wednesday morning.
The incident occurred late in the fourth quarter of the Aces’ 99-89 Game 2 loss to the Indiana Fever at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. After drawing a foul on Sophie Cunningham, Wilson became visibly agitated with a fan seated near the baseline. Video showed the four-time MVP approaching the stands, pointing and shouting at the spectator while teammates and officials intervened to restrain her. Wilson was assessed a technical foul at the time.
According to a league statement released early Wednesday, the suspension was issued for “inappropriate misconduct and actions that risked escalating a fan interaction beyond acceptable bounds.” The ruling prevents Wilson from playing in Game 3 of the first-round series.
Wilson addressed the moment postgame Tuesday, saying she reacted after the fan stepped toward her and pointed. “If I see a man come at me, taking steps towards me and pointing at me, I don’t give a damn what you said… that is unacceptable,” she told reporters. She apologized to her teammates for the technical but stood by her response.
The Fever organization had earlier stated that arena security reviewed the situation and found no violation of the Fan Code of Conduct by the spectator, who was briefly escorted away before being allowed to return to his seat.
Aces coach Becky Hammon expressed surprise at the intensity of Wilson’s reaction, noting she had rarely seen her star player respond that way. Wilson, widely regarded as one of the league’s most composed competitors, has built a reputation for elite production and professionalism throughout her career.
The one-game ban is relatively mild by league standards for on-court or fan-related incidents but still carries significant weight in a tightly contested playoff series. Without Wilson, the Aces will lean more heavily on supporting players as they attempt to even the series.
League officials emphasized that player safety and maintaining orderly interactions with fans remain priorities, particularly during high-stakes postseason games. Wilson is expected to be eligible to return for a potential Game 4.
The suspension has already sparked debate among fans and analysts about the line between competitive intensity and acceptable conduct when players engage with spectators. For now, the four-time MVP will watch Game 3 from the sideline as the Aces navigate the next chapter of their playoff run without their franchise centerpiece
