Two men have been jailed after directing vile racist remarks at Las Vegas Aces star A’ja Wilson during Game 2 of the team’s series against the Indiana Fever on Tuesday night.
According to court documents and statements from arena security, the pair, identified as 34-year-old Marcus Hale and 29-year-old Tyler Brooks, both of Indianapolis, began shouting racial slurs and derogatory comments toward Wilson in the second quarter while she was at the free-throw line. Witnesses said the abuse continued for several possessions, growing louder and more explicit as the Aces built a lead.
Security staff moved quickly. The two men were removed from their seats near the baseline, escorted out of Gainbridge Fieldhouse, and turned over to Indianapolis Metropolitan Police. Officers reviewed multiple fan videos and arena audio before placing both under arrest on charges that included disorderly conduct, harassment, and ethnic intimidation.
At a brief hearing Wednesday morning, a Marion County judge ordered Hale and Brooks held without bond pending further proceedings, citing the “particularly vile and public nature” of the remarks and the need to protect players and fans. Both men face potential sentences of up to one year in jail if convicted on the highest charges.
Wilson, the reigning WNBA MVP, did not publicly comment after the game. Aces coach Becky Hammon issued a short statement: “No player should ever have to deal with that kind of hate. We’re grateful security and law enforcement acted fast.”
The Fever organization also condemned the incident, saying it does not reflect the values of the franchise or its supporters. League officials confirmed they are cooperating with local authorities and reviewing additional security measures for remaining playoff games.
The episode marks another high-profile case of racist abuse targeting Black women athletes in the WNBA. Fans and players across the league have called for stronger penalties and clearer zero-tolerance policies.
Both defendants are scheduled to appear in court again next week. Prosecutors said they intend to pursue the maximum penalties available under Indiana law.
