New York Liberty Star Sabrina Ionescu SUSPENDED  indefinitely After Physical Altercation with Assist. Coach Courtney Paris …

The New York Liberty have suspended star guard Sabrina Ionescu indefinitely following a physical altercation with assistant coach Courtney Paris during a closed practice session earlier this week, the team announced Wednesday.

According to multiple sources familiar with the situation, the incident occurred late in a high-intensity practice as the Liberty prepared for a critical stretch of the WNBA season. Tempers flared after a disputed call in a scrimmage drill. Words were exchanged between Ionescu and Paris, who was providing on-court instruction. The confrontation escalated when Ionescu allegedly shoved Paris, prompting the former center and current assistant to push back. Teammates and other staff quickly intervened to separate the two before the situation worsened.

The Liberty organization moved swiftly. Team president Keia Clarke and head coach Chris DeMarco met with both parties and league officials. In a statement released through the team’s communications department, the Liberty said: “We take the integrity of our workplace and the standards of our organization extremely seriously. After a thorough internal review, we have determined that a suspension is the appropriate response. Sabrina Ionescu will be held out of team activities until further notice while we continue to address this matter.”

Ionescu, a four-time All-Star, 2024 WNBA champion, and one of the league’s most recognizable faces, has been a cornerstone of the Liberty’s recent success. Her leadership and elite shooting have defined the franchise’s resurgence. Courtney Paris, a former WNBA player known for her physical presence and basketball IQ, joined the coaching staff to help develop the team’s interior play and defensive schemes.

Neither Ionescu nor Paris issued public comments Wednesday. Sources indicated that both expressed regret over the incident during internal meetings. The WNBA is monitoring the situation but has not announced any additional league discipline at this time.

The suspension leaves the Liberty short-handed at a pivotal moment. Ionescu’s absence will force greater reliance on the backcourt rotation and testing the depth of a roster built around championship aspirations. Fans and observers across the league expressed surprise at the news, given Ionescu’s typically composed demeanor and the professional reputation of the Liberty’s coaching staff.

The team did not specify a timeline for Ionescu’s potential return. Further updates are expected in the coming days as the organization works to resolve the matter internally and restore focus on the court.
